NEW! Spring 2008 Newsletter!
Fall 2007 NewsletterWith Fall comes change – the leaves change color, children get new clothes for school, our suppliers are sending us wonderful new yarns, threads, and patterns, our knitting camp gets a new name, and Ana Cross Stitch will have a new owner. In the past 15 1/2 years I have never regretted having to go to work. All of you have made this “job” so much fun. I have made so many friends and all my employees have been so supportive. Linda, Diane, Carol, Sandi, Lesley, Val, Kathy, Nancy, Gloria and Ruthie were so helpful to the customers, and Carlann faithfully came in each Thursday morning to vacuum and clean. I’m not leaving totally. Kristi has asked me to be here Monday and Tuesday as well as teach a class or two. I plan to have more time to knit and stitch. Maybe I’ll get some more models finished for the store. We plan to continue with our Fall Retreat and Camp Yawatink (Knitaway backward). The transition to Kristi’s ownership has been smooth. You’ll see a few changes but all will be “growing up” changes that are needed. The official change of hands will be September 1st. The reason for the change in name from Camp Knitaway to Camp Yawatink (suggested by Patty Thompson) is because Cheryl Oberle (knitting designer and author) contacted us with the request that we change the name because she had trademarked the name Knitaway in 2006. Rather than try to fight it we decided it was easier to just change the name, the Camp already has a wonderful history and reputation, so the format will remain the same. This year the teacher will be Evelyn Clark, lace designer extraordinaire. For more information, see the registration insert. Because mailing has become so expensive we are starting to phase out our mailing in favor of emailing the newsletter to those of you who have email. It is always put on our web site so if you have an email address you haven’t shared with us yet and wish to continue to receive notices, please send it to us. Thank you. We continue to have a 50% reduction in prices in our Sale section of the store. Check it out when you visit us. New yarns for Fall include the entire line of Harrisville Shetland wool, jumper weight. This compares in weight to the Alice Starmore Campion yarn and can be used for many of the patterns in her books which are now discontinued but prized if you have them. There are 54 glorious colors. Comfort by Berroco is a worsted weight synthetic yarn that feels like merino wool. For those who cannot wear wool but like the softness, this yarn is for you. Many of you have been felting bags. Kristi, the new owner, had a booth at our Arts Festival in August. Her bags are stunning and were a big success. You will want to take a class or two from her. Several new books on felting (fulling) have been published. Needle felting to embellish as well as 3D figures keep the felting craze going. We have kits of sheep, bunnies (see picture), hedgehogs, ladybugs, turtles, and more that would make cute Christmas ornaments. Sock knitting is still strong in the Northwest. We have added Tofutsies, a wool, soy silk, cotton, and chitin (from shrimp and crab shells) yarn. Sox Appeal is another new one which is a merino wool and elastic for the sock that will always stay neat on your foot. Kaffe Fassett is a name we all recognize as a master of color. Regia has a new line designed by him called Mirage and Landscape Colors. The Landscape Effect are stripes of colors put together as only Kaffe can and the Mirage Effect are shorter lengths of color that seem to “flash” around the sock. We have all the colors.
A NOTE FROM KRISTI:I know this news comes as a big surprise to you. And you must have many questions. So let me start with the most obvious and you can come in and ask me the others. Will you still carry the same products?Yes, we are keeping needlepoint, and cross stitch supplies, as well as all of the yarns and threads you love. Then what is changing? While we are making some internal technical changes, including a new computer system, Ana-Cross Stitch will continue to bring you world-class patterns and supplies, innovative classes, and the friendly atmosphere that you know. So come on in, bring your project, and chat a while, sign up for a class, and check out the wonderful new items that come in everyday. Who are you?Kristi Gabrielse, I moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1992 from the Chicago area. My background includes a degree in restaurant management from the University of WI-Stout, experience in the hotel and catering industries, marketing, and manufacturing. I have taught classes in multiple arts including felting, papermaking, and beading. In my spare time, I have been rehabbing my 101-year-old house, painting furniture, and knitting and felting about 40 purses for the Anacortes Arts Festival. I am very excited about being the new owner of the Ana-Cross Stitch Store. Please join me in congratulating Lois and thanking her for building this extraordinary Anacortes landmark.
